At Sundays River Primary we put emphasis on the need for every learner to gain, and have access to cultural knowledge, skills and understanding. Arts education, solve problems. Years of research show that it is linked to almost everything that we as a nation say we want for our children and demand from our schools: academic achievement, social and emotional development, civic engagement, and equitable opportunity. Involvement in the arts is associated with gains in math, reading, cognitive ability, critical thinking, and verbal skill. Arts learning can also improve motivation, concentration, confidence, and teamwork. A 2005 report by the “Rand Corporation” about the visual arts argues that the intrinsic pleasure and stimulation of the art experience do more than sweeten an individual’s life – according to the report, they “can connect people; more deeply to the world and open them to new ways of seeing, “creating the foundation to forge social bonds and community cohesion”. Strong arts programming in schools helps close a gap that has left many a child behind.
It is not the aim of this page to put forth lists of arguments on the Value of Art and Culture. There is more than enough research freely available on this topic. However, we can proudly say that Sundays River Primary endorse every aspect of Arts and Culture ranging from dance, drama, visual arts, music, etc. To highlight the importance and our belief in this: we have a very strong Music Department in our school, we have two school choirs, we are proud to host the annual Art and Culture Festival for all Primary and Secondary School learners in the Uitenhage District (see the page on the Art and Culture Festival) Furthermore, in 2013 we stage the musical: Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. We further enhance interaction between learners (not just in our school, but we also involve learners from other schools in our Valley) by means of the Valley Idols Competition, Art and Culture Festival etc. Each and every project that is launched by the Art and Culture Department of Sundays River Primary School directly contributes to the overall development and involvement of our learners.
We are very proud to say that Art and Culture in all its diversities are very strong and alive at Sundays River Primary School. For this reason, we have dedicated on this website, several sub-pages to endorse our deep understanding, and our support and concern to enhance the overall development on all levels of our learners.
